"Savage Beauty" - A Tribute to Alexander McQueen
On a warm, rainy night back in August, I ventured off to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) to see the closing of the "Savage Beauty" - Alexander McQueen exhibit. The exhibition proved to be one of the most popular exhibits in the musuem's history.
I waited, in one of three lines, for three and half hours. I knew the night was sure to be one, that I would not soon forget. I was amazed by the number of people that came out to see one of the most recognized and influential designers of all time. Some of them wore McQueen and others used their own creativity to express their sense of fashion. As I walked into the exhibit and saw his collections on display, I became immersed into the "World of McQueen."
The exhibit was broken down into several themed rooms "The Romantic Mind, Romantic Gothic and Cabinet of Curiosities, Romantic Nationalism, Romantic Exoticism, Romantic Privitism and Romantic Naturalism." Small TVs displayed runway shows of previous collections over the years, including the infamous "Plato's Atlantis" - which showcased McQueen's Spring/Summer 2010 collection. It is still one of the most captivating shows, because it is like you are thrown into an "underwater world." It was also McQueen's last show before he died. http://www.alexandermcqueen.com/int/en/corporate/archive2010_ss_womensp.aspx
As the night ended, I was overwhelmed with emotion and fascination. How could such a genious break all the rules of fashion, invent them and be gone? Alexander McQueen was adored by his fans and the fashion industry, and he will not be forgotten. My sincerest thanks to The Costume Institute and The MET for sharing his work with the world, and to Sarah Burton for contining his vision. I am so grateful to have witnessed his work and see his creativity "come to life."
"You've got to know the rules to break them. That's what I'm here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition. " ~Alexander McQueen (1969-2010)
